Baltic Index / Baltikum-Index. Pictorial Documentation on Art and History in Estonia and Latvia (Historical Provinces Estonia, Courland, Livonia, and Oesel). (Bilddokumentation zur Kunst und Geschichte in Estland und Lettland [Historische Provinzen Estland, Kurland, Livland und Ösel].) Ed. by Bildarchiv Foto Marburg – Deutsches Dokumentationszentrum f. Kunstgeschichte Philipps-Universität Marburg. 4 issues. C. 31,000 photos on 415 silverfiches. Reader factor 24x. 2005-2006. More than 23,000 historic pictures document in great detail all important and largely destroyed buildings of the old Baltic Sea provinces of Estonia, Livonia, Courland, and Oesel, with the focus on the large cities, but also including hundreds of pictures of smaller towns. Among them approx. 3,000 photos of Reval’s (Tallinn’s) Gothic and baroque architectural riches, from its large churches to the impressive city walls, a comprehensive documentation of the classically-built university city of Dorpat (Tartu) as of the old diocesan and Hanseatic town of Riga, the “metropolis of the Baltic States”. Also of great historical value the hundreds of pre-war pictures of the former capital of the duchy of Courland, Mitau (Jelgava), almost completely destroyed in 1944, and more than 7,000 pictures of the historical and highly interesting architecture of aristocratic country estates, ranging from traditional Baltic wooden buildings to classic and neo-baroque castle-like edifices, documented in photos, prints, and drawings. Besides hundreds of paintings from different periods in public and private collections the index also includes about 9,000 portrait pictures, primarily of members of the German-Baltic aristocracy. – With 24,000 the majority of these historically valuable photographs originate from the collection of prominent Baltic states researcher, Georg von Krusenstjern (1899-1989). – The index is also part of the Marburger Index.
