Worldwide  unparalleled  documentation  of  art

recorded as well as collected in the comprised countries and regions from prehistory to the present. In photos made since 1850 and overwhelmingly preserved in the famous photo archives at Marburg, Cologne, and the Deutsche Fotothek of the Saxon State Library at Dresden. Works of all categories, but with special regard to architecture, painting, sculpture, arts and crafts from the Middle Ages till modern times. Arranged in four groups according to places: municipal architecture – sacred building – profane building – collections. Each group with additional classification. The section “town” e.g. is subdivided in plans and views, fortification, places and streets, ephemeral architecture, history.

The “collections” comprise public as well as private collections. Among the public also the Ethnological Museums – Museums of Classical Antiquities – Cultural-Historical Museums – Libraries – Archives. Thus the Marburger Index contains e.g. 50,000 photos of book illustration from German libraries.

Among the groups and their sections all photos in a fixed order. Each photo with a concise scientific legend and dated as exactly as possible. More than 100,000 photos absolutely unknown till today, although up to 130 years old. – For separately available parts see below. – Extensive search indices available on CD-ROM.
