Cornelisz van Haarlem – Thiel, Pieter J. J. van. Cornelis Cornelisz van Haarlem (1562-1638). A Monograph and Catalogue Raisonné. 1999. 4to. 600 pp. text. With 32 color plates & 436 plate ills. Orig. cloth.

AETAS AUREA XIII. – “Important Haarlem painter ( – adherent of the art history of the 16th century in the following of especially Karel van Mander’s – ) of pictures of mythological, biblical and historical content, more seldom of genre paintings and portraits. His nude figures with frequently greatly emphasized muscles, foreshortening and dramatic movements reveal the mannerist … Extremely esteemed in his time the artist has passed on the charming mannerism of his nude figures (often sitting male and female nudes from behind) as teacher of the famous Haarlem academy to a large, extended circle” (Bernt).

Van Mander may have considered his younger friend’s œuvre from life as final fulfillment of his own ambition. That is the elevation of Dutch history painting to the level of the Italians. Present monograph therefore also closing a desideratum painfully felt since long.
