more  than  1  million  artists  A–Z

Oct. 2009 ff. User interface and explanation of abbreviations in English and German, articles in German, many additionally in their respective original language.

More  than  500,000  comprehensive  signed  biographic  articles

including the complete text of all published volumes of Allgemeines Künstler-Lexikon (at this time vols. 1-69 & supplements 1-4 covering Aa – Horst Hartung Franz & A Er – Salla Casset resp.) and, for the remainder of the alphabet, full texts based on the artist dictionaries of Thieme-Becker & Vollmer, the Nuremberg Artist Dictionary, and the Dictionary of Female Artists 1700-1900.

Each  year  about  7,000  biographic  articles  are  added ,

with an increasing number being published – exclusively in the online database –

additionally  in  their  respective  original  language

(more than 6,000 at this time). Moreover all articles are constantly updated by the editors, supported by an international advisory committee and more than 5,000 expert authors from all over the world, to reflect the most recent data, exhibitions, and sources. And

all  articles  are  accessible  for  full  text search !

Besides numerous further search criteria for professional scholarly research provided. Furthermore articles are linked to Gemälde in Museen – Deutschland, Österreich, Schweiz (Paintings in Museums – Germany, Austria, Switzerland, separate subscription required) for one-click access to the locations of works of art, and an increasing number of articles – at this time more than 8,000 with an emphasis on contemporary artists – quotes the respective PND number of their record in the German National Library.

And not least:

Covering the fine arts of the whole world in the broadest sense, from antiquity to the present, including i. a. painters, graphic designers, sculptors, architects, photographers, calligraphers, and craftsmen, and providing at the highest encyclopedic and art-historical standards besides the biography information on the creative work and the art-historical significance, a selection of works with respective location, and extensive bibliography on artists.
