Everdingen – Davies, Alice I. The Drawings of Allart van Everdingen. A Complete Catalogue

including  the  Studies  for  Reynard  the  Fox

(by Hendrik van Alcmar). 2007. 4to. 504 pp. With 756 (10 color) ills. Orig. cloth.

CATALOG  RAISONNÉ  with extensive text, bibliography, and indices on the drawings of this important landscapist, draughtsman, and etcher (Alkmaar 1621 – Amsterdam 1675), pupil of Roeland Savery + Pieter de Molijn as well as himself teacher of the marine painter Ludolf Backhuysen, whose yield from his voyage to Scandinavia set standards.

“ From a travel to Sweden and Norway he then brought home numerous sketches, details of nature from the northern mountainous world, he elaborated in his paintings and numerous graphic sheets. The northern landscape is animated by Dutch figure accessories.

The  sketches  from  Scandinavia  met  with  an  immense  interest  in  Central  Europe .

Certainly he has inspired  J(acob)  van  Ruisdael&  and others with these themes. The less numerous  marine  drawings  just as his sea paintings origin from the early period In the 18th century these sheets and especially his watercolors were frequently valued ten times as high as a sketch by J. van Ruisdael ”

(Bernt, [Draughtsmen], 2nd ed., 1979, yet of the erroneous opinion that “the  large  series  of  studies  as  illustrations  for  ‘Reynard the Fox’ … [were] not published as engravings in a book edition”).

Mentioned also the collectors of the sheets along with their marks and possible details just as the imitations and copies extant till today.
