on  all  artists  active  between  2650  B. C.  and  750  A. D.

and  passed  on  to  us  by  their  name

consider all important kinds of ancient art production, especially architecture, painting, sculpture, vases, mosaics, bronzes, terra-cottas. Excluded are products of daily life without artistic or intellectual identity of creation though not proclaiming the present state of knowledge as a dogma. Thus also the biographies of artists are included who latest research called in question or even rejected.

Besides the wealth of artists known only through ancient literature especially standing out

the  first  compilation  of  Egyptian  artists

just as other periods and categories only poorly considered by art history are made accessible. About 1500 of the recorded artists were active in regions ruled by Greeks, 1200 in the Roman Empire and 900 in old Egypt. – Vol. II with appendix on about 150 artists not yet identified by name when vol.
